Castletown Kombi Cubby

In April this year teams in Townsville were invited by Programmed customer Castletown Shopping Centre to create the ultimate play hub to be given away to one lucky shopper.

For the past eight months Programmed Property Services (PPS) has carried out various painting and maintenance jobs for the centre and in the lead up to Easter, PPS was approached to see if the team could build a cubby house that would be raffled.

Business development manager Daniel Stevens, who also moonlights as a design guru, had an even better idea; why not make the cubby in the shape of a vintage Kombi van?

“The budget they gave us wasn’t very big so we sat down and started planning what we could do for the price and from there our vision to build the ultimate Kombi cubby was born,” said Daniel.

“We wanted to build something that looked like a Kombi van, but to add some extra Programmed flare we also envisaged it would look like a Programmed work van.

“When word got out about our project we had many enthusiastic, passionate and eager-to-help staff, subcontractors, suppliers as well as the combined resources from Property Services, Programmed Electrical Technologies (PET) and Programmed Skilled Workforce (PSW).”

PPS team members, along with generous subcontractors, constructed and painted the cubby. PET’s John Duncanson and his skilled team of electricians kitted out the space with a projection unit and sound system. PSW’s Steve Hall and his team supplied the signage and additional labour to finish the project.

The Kombi cubby was then displayed at Castletown Shopping Centre for a number of weeks and received a number of local radio mentions, magazine features and even got air time on television!

More than 5,000 people entered the competition to win the Kombi valued at $12.5k, with lucky Spencer McCarthy being announced as the winner in late April.

“As you can see the cubby looks amazing, we’re all very proud of the finished product,” said Daniel.

“Spencer and her mothers were very excited to play in the cubby at home and couldn’t thank Programmed enough for their hard work and attention to detail.

“This special project shows how all Programmed divisions can come together to deliver a high end result for our customers.”
