Empowering Futures: Programmed’s Justice Reintegration Program at Banksia Hill Detention Centre

Feb 17, 2025

At Programmed, we believe in the power of opportunity. That’s why we are so proud to partner with the WA Department of Justice to create real pathways for young people at Banksia Hill to build meaningful careers.

Recently featured on Channel 10 News, this initiative highlights the work being done to equip the young people with vocational skills, boosting their confidence and employability as they prepare to reintegrate into society.

Breaking the Cycle Through Employment

For many young people in Banksia Hill, gaining employment after release can be a significant challenge. Our program aims to bridge this gap by providing hands-on training in key trade areas such as painting and maintenance, cleaning and groundskeeping.

Through training, mentorship, and practical work experience, these young individuals gain not just technical skills, but also skills such as teamwork, responsibility, and workplace readiness.

Real Impact, Real People

The Channel 10 News coverage showcased the positive changes this initiative is making. Young participants shared their stories, reflecting on how the program is helping them develop confidence and motivation for a better future.

One young participant shared:
“Before this program, I didn’t really see a future for myself. Now, I have skills that can get me a real job when I get out. It makes me feel like I have a second chance.”

Another participant added:
“Having someone believe in me and teach me real skills has been life-changing. It’s not just about learning a trade; it’s about knowing I can do something positive with my life.”

Programmed team members working closely with the initiative also spoke about the importance of mentorship, reinforcing that employment is a key factor in reducing recidivism.

Ben Hasler, Programmed’s Justice Reintegration Team Leader noted:
“Giving these young people real skills means giving them a pathway to employment and stability. We’re not just teaching trades; we’re helping them rebuild their lives.”
