Giving Back and Serving Our Community A Tasty Lunch

Jun 20, 2022

As part of National Volunteers Week, some of the Western Australia team at Programmed had the special opportunity to join The Salvation Army and help prepare and serve delicious meals to over 100 people. This community lunch event allowed the team to help people experiencing homelessness directly, those who are socially isolated, the elderly and ultimately, anyone needing a warm meal and some company for the day.

“It was a great, rewarding day for the team and everyone involved. The day was well organised, and we met many lovely people. It was a fantastic team-building day and an amazing opportunity to give back to the community,’’ said Krista Sambuco – Vendor Administrator at Programmed.

The community lunch is an excellent opportunity for anyone in the local community to come to a safe and welcoming environment and enjoy a delicious, nutritious meal, especially for those who are the least fortunate and most vulnerable in our Perth community.

‘’Homelessness, addiction, and mental illness often leave people alienated from the communities in which they live. The Salvation Army aims to provide opportunities for people to connect with and feel part of the community,’’ said Deborah Robinson – Corps Officer at the Salvation Army.

‘’The day commenced with an orientation and Welcome to Country, which was a special touch. As a group, we know we made a difference in someone’s life today, which means everything. A big shout out to the eight volunteers who represented the Facility Management team,’’ said Krista Sambuco.

Teams get to choose, organise and prepare what meals they want to share for the day.

‘’We provided vegan and non-vegan options. It was a green salad, rice and chili con carne and some yummy ice cream to finish off for dessert,’’ said Krista Sambuco.

“We value the support of corporates and the general community in ensuring that Community Lunches happen,’’ said Deborah Robinson.

The day was a unique, memorable experience for the team to make a difference in someone’s day in the community. Volunteering brings people together and creates a better society for everyone. We look forward to being a part of another Salvation Army Community Lunch soon!

The communities where we operate, and where our employees live, are an important part of our business. Our people are encouraged to identify projects that are important to them, as well as take an active role in delivering sponsorship and volunteering opportunities.
