Direction des Constructions Navales Services (DCNS) Australia is a subsidiary of DCNS, a French naval shipbuilding company and European leader in naval defence. Having won the bid to build Australia’s latest nuclear submarine fleet, DCNS needed electrical and communication systems installed at their new office in Adelaide.
Programmed’s proven experience in delivering to high security environments and ability to meet stringent speed, data integrity and security standards led to the project being awarded to us.
Close communication proved critical to successful delivery. Several meetings were held with security personnel and the French Information Communications Technology (ICT) representatives to determine exact requirements and expectations. The complex nature of the requests, along with the language barrier, certainly presented some interesting challenges.
As the site contains confidential information, security is paramount for DCNS. To prevent any possibility of people or other tenants tampering with the network, a special raised floor system was installed throughout the majority of the office floors. This required an additional installation of an extensive cable tray system to service the ICT network and relevant power requirements.
Due to the sensitive nature of the communications system, very detailed designs were required and DCNS had various restrictions on cable types and colours. In order to procure the appropriate cables so that we fully met all of the different requirements, Programmed had to literally search the globe. This critical process enabled us to successfully fulfil the end requirement which was to install three distinct networks, each with their individual levels of security. The successful installation also incorporated a clear conduit, shielded category 6A cabling and some sensitive fibre optic terminations housed within DNCS’ crypto-graphed safe.
Programmed delivered a cost effective and high assurance network solution to DNCS within the original desired timeframe in spite of initial delays in the awarding of the project. Armed with a robust and secure network and facility, DNCS can now focus on strengthening Australia’s naval defences.
