FM Day 2026: Building Safer Environments Through Everyday Actions

May 11, 2026

As we celebrate FM Day 2026 and this year’s theme, Cultivating Belonging Through Built Environments, it’s important to recognise that truly inclusive spaces begin with one essential foundation: safety.

At Programmed, safety is more than compliance, it’s about creating environments where people feel protected, supported and empowered to speak up. Whether it’s maintaining critical assets, managing complex facilities or delivering everyday services, safety plays a vital role in shaping workplaces where everyone can thrive.

This year, our Safety. Think about it. campaign reinforced a simple but powerful message: most incidents don’t happen because people ignore safety – they happen when something small is overlooked. A quick assumption, changing conditions or pressure to keep work moving can all have serious consequences. The campaign encouraged teams to pause before starting work, assess risks and trust their judgement if something doesn’t feel right.

Across toolbox talks, videos and internal communications, the campaign focused on practical behaviours that support safer outcomes every day:

  • Pausing before starting work
  • Identifying hazards and changing conditions
  • Checking controls are in place
  • Speaking up when something feels unsafe
  • Supporting a culture where safety conversations are encouraged

As highlighted throughout the campaign, “You will always be supported for choosing safety.”

Proactive Safety in Action

Recently, Programmed teams undertook a proactive review of cooling tower and water system management processes across multiple sites. The review focused on identifying risks early, strengthening preventative maintenance practices and ensuring compliance measures remained aligned with industry best practice.

Rather than waiting for issues to arise, teams completed audits, reviewed maintenance schedules and reinforced safety controls to help protect building occupants, contractors and the broader community. The findings also helped improve long-term processes, including asset visibility, planning systems and operational awareness across teams.

The initiative highlighted an important part of Programmed’s safety culture: continuous improvement. By proactively reviewing risks and sharing lessons learned across teams, we continue to create safer and more resilient built environments.

Safety-First Thinking on Site

nother strong example of safety leadership came from an Isolating Energy Sources incident during electrical works conducted at a customer site, where contractors identified an unexpected live power source during planned works. Thanks to thorough testing, careful investigation and precautionary controls, the work was immediately stopped and made safe before any incident could arise.

The situation reinforced the importance of:

  • Taking time to reassess changing conditions
  • Following isolation and verification procedures
  • Encouraging workers to stop work and raise concerns when something doesn’t feel right

Ultimately, the outcome was positive because safety remained the priority throughout the task, exactly the type of proactive thinking that helps prevent serious incidents before they happen.

Safety Supports Belonging

Creating inclusive and welcoming environments goes beyond the physical space itself – it’s about creating workplaces where people feel safe, respected and comfortable speaking up. When safety and wellbeing are prioritised, stronger teams, workplaces and communities follow.

As Programmed celebrates 75 years of supporting customers, communities and workplaces across Australia and New Zealand, safety continues to remain at the centre of how we operate. From frontline teams to operational leaders, every conversation, pause and proactive decision contributes to safer built environments for everyone.

Because cultivating belonging starts with creating spaces where people feel safe to be there.
