Wadjemup / Rottnest recycling soap in new Sustainability Initiative

Jun 1, 2023

Programmed is proud to announce a successful sustainability initiative currently being implemented with Rottnest Island Authority across the Island.

Since October 2022, soap bars that guests have previously discarded are now being turned into new bars and sent to communities across Australia and abroad. With the help of a sustainability charity, Soap Aid, the Island has saved 50 kgs of used soap from landfill and repurposed them into 500 bars of soap, saving the lives of 18 children and providing a 12-month supply of soap for ten families.

Repurposed soap is estimated to reduce carbon emissions by 40 per cent compared to using new soap.

This sustainable approach is a fantastic initiative proposed and initiated by Programmed’s Support Services Manager, Ben Rybar with the assistance of the broader Housekeeping Team on the Island.

As a result of this sustainability initiative, the Rottnest Island Authority is now recognised as a Soap Aid Hotel to Hands Champion.
