This week, our VIC Operations team hosted an Apprentice Day Workshop in Brooklyn, bringing together apprentices, leaders and subject matter experts to focus on safety, skills and workplace awareness.
The day kicked off with Nat Hickox, Head of FM (VIC/TAS & Utilities), who set the tone with insights on the importance of safety in everyday work. Throughout the sessions, apprentices gained practical knowledge on topics including recent WorkSafe incidents, asbestos awareness, vehicle inspections, and the use of safety tools such as ProSafe and Safety Culture.
A highlight of the day was celebrating Alia Djajamihardja, Asset Services Technician, and Apprentice Electricians Andrej Kralev and Samantha Zee, who were recognised for successfully completing their apprenticeships, a fantastic achievement!
A particularly impactful moment came from Ash Manzie, Electrical Worker, who shared his personal experience with a workplace incident and the lasting impact it had on his life. His story reinforced a powerful message: the incident was preventable, and with proper hazard reporting and controls in place, it could have been avoided.
Speakers also shared personal journeys and real-life experiences, reinforcing a key message: many workplace incidents are preventable, and speaking up can make all the difference.
The workshop included interactive activities, a communication exercise and a site tour, encouraging collaboration and reinforcing the role clear communication plays in maintaining safe work environments.
Thanks to the efforts of the Apprentice Coordination Committee and everyone involved in delivering the day, the workshop was a great success, with apprentices walking away with valuable insights and a stronger commitment to safety.
