"It’s excellent that the Programmed ground staff show initiative and want to improve the ground’s appearance at the university."

Mark Corea, Grounds Curator
Monash University

Project Description

Monash University, one of Australia’s leading universities, has entrusted Programmed with the maintenance and enhancement of its open space environments across four campuses—Clayton, Caulfield, Peninsula, and Parkville—since 2009. This long-term partnership reflects a shared commitment to sustainability, campus presentation, and operational excellence.

Over the years, Programmed has delivered a broad range of services, from routine grounds maintenance to transformative landscape upgrades. These works have supported Monash’s goal of creating vibrant, accessible, and environmentally conscious campuses that enhance the experience for students, staff, and visitors.

Project Scope

Programmed’s scope of work spans both ongoing open space maintenance and major landscape redevelopment projects:

Open Space Maintenance

Regular lawn and garden care, sports turf and cricket wicket upkeep, and tree management for over 14,000 trees across all campuses.

Battery-operated equipment introduced at Clayton campus to reduce carbon and noise emissions.

Project Outcome

Through these projects, Monash University has seen a significant upgrade in the quality and functionality of its open spaces. The open spaces are now more sustainable, accessible, and visually appealing, with enhanced opportunities for research and recreation.

All works were delivered with minimal disruption, thanks to Programmed’s flexible scheduling and collaborative approach.

Key Project Value Adds

  • Sustainability: Battery-operated equipment and native plantings support Monash’s environmental goals.
  • Long-Term Partnership: Reappointed in 2014 and 2019, reflecting trust and performance.
  • Campus Enhancement: Upgraded landscapes improve aesthetics, access, and usability.
  • Flexibility: Scheduling aligned with academic calendars and events.
  • Single Point of Contact: Streamlined communication and responsive service.
  • Collaborative Delivery: Weekly site meetings and adaptive planning ensured smooth execution.

C2 Car Park Redevelopment – Clayton Campus

Monash University undertook a visionary transformation of the C2 carpark at its Clayton campus, converting the underused asphalted area into a vibrant native flowering meadow. The project was designed to enhance the campus experience while supporting research into native grassland species and sustainable landscape practices.

Transformation of a traditional car park into a native flowering meadow. Works included demolition, drainage and irrigation installation, bulk earthworks, and construction of accessible paths, seating, lighting, and furniture.

Specialised soil was used to support the growth of native plants, aligning with Monash’s sustainability goals.

Scope of Works

Programmed Property Services was engaged to deliver the full landscaping and infrastructure upgrade, which included:

  • Demolition of existing asphalt and underground services
  • Bulk earthworks and reshaping of terrain for natural contours
  • Installation of drainage and irrigation systems
  • Construction of exposed aggregate concrete paths and seating
  • Integration of lighting and furniture for public use
  • Preparation of planting zones with specialised soils for native flora research

Project Outcome

The redeveloped space now serves as a multifunctional open space that supports biodiversity, student wellbeing, and academic research. It reflects Monash’s commitment to sustainability and innovation in campus design.

Key Value Adds

  • Single Point of Contact: Streamlined communication throughout the project
  • Sustainable Landscaping: Native plantings and low-impact design
  • Research Integration: Supports studies into native flora and soil conditions
  • Public Realm Upgrade: Improved accessibility and amenity for students and staff
  • Environmental Infrastructure: Drainage and irrigation designed for long-term resilience

B61 Demolition and Sacrificial Landscape – Clayton Campus

Following departmental relocation, Programmed demolished Building 61 and redeveloped the area into a soft landscape with improved pedestrian access. The project involved earthworks, drainage, irrigation, new pavements, furniture, and signage installation.

Coordination with university schedules and high-traffic zones ensured minimal disruption to campus life.

Scope of Works

Programmed was contracted to deliver the demolition and landscape works, which included:

The project involved:

  • Demolition of Building 61 and adjacent carpark
  • Minor earthworks and reshaping of the site
  • Installation of drainage, electrical, and irrigation systems
  • Construction of new concrete pavements and edging
  • Asphalt resurfacing of upgraded carpark zones
  • Planting of new landscape areas and installation of furniture and signage

The project required close coordination with Monash University due to its location near a delivery bay and high pedestrian traffic. Programmed adapted work zones and schedules daily to accommodate class timetables, events, and exam periods.

Project Outcome

The completed works revitalised the precinct, creating a visually appealing and functional open space that improves pedestrian flow and supports the university’s sustainability goals. The soft landscaping enhances the campus environment and provides a welcoming space for students and staff.

Key Value Adds

  • Flexible Project Management: Responsive to class schedules and high pedestrian traffic
  • Landscape Enhancement: Soft landscaping improves aesthetics and usability
  • Infrastructure Upgrade: New pavements, furniture, and signage
  • Environmental Sensitivity: Works delivered with consideration for student experience
  • Trusted Partnership: Reinforces Programmed’s long-term relationship with Monash

Monash University has been very pleased with the results achieved by the Programmed Melbourne team and the resources Programmed has invested in the university’s grounds. The improved appearance of the gardens and quality of the grounds, particularly the sporting turf, have so pleased the university that Programmed now manages the open space for all six Monash Australian campuses.
