Enriching our knowledge of First Nations culture with Willum Warrain

Aug 31, 2023

With goals to increase representation of First Nations people in our workforce and to foster a safe and inclusive environment for all, it’s essential that we’re equipped with the knowledge and understanding to do it right. With this in mind, team members from across Programmed Facility Management’s HR, Procurement, and Sales and Marketing teams recently volunteered at Willum Warrain as part of our commitment to learning more about First Nations culture and Country.

Willum Warrain (‘home by the sea’) Aboriginal Association is a gathering place where Aboriginal people come together to realise community aspirations and forge shared identity, situated in Bunurong/Boon Wurrung country (Hastings region on the Mornington Peninsula). It provides information and referral services, charitable support, health and wellbeing programs, art and culture programs, and links between the Aboriginal community and the broader local community.

The teams’ volunteering day opened with a welcoming ceremony and a yarning/discussion to gain insight into the culture and history of First Nations peoples. From there, the team was eager to assist in the native nursery and helped to prepare a traditional meal for lunch.

The volunteering day was an enriching experience that expanded our knowledge and understanding of First Nations culture and strengthened our connection with the community, as well as within our own teams. We’d like to thank Willum Warrain for hosting our teams and providing such valuable insight!
