At Programmed, we believe in the power of coming together, not just to work, but to connect, learn, and grow. Our monthly BBQ at Curtin University is more than just a meal—it’s an opportunity for the team to engage with the village staff, strengthen relationships, and create a sense of community. It’s also a perfect platform for our interns to turn theory into practice, showcasing the spirit of what makes us come to work each day, the reason why we work and smile.
“When we first gathered at Vickery House for one of these BBQs, we encountered a minor hiccup: the BBQ itself didn’t work. It hadn’t been reported, suggesting it wasn’t often used or perhaps had been forgotten for some time. Instead of seeing this as a setback, we saw it as a chance for our interns to dive into a real-world challenge.” – Wayne Phillips, Contract Manager (Programmed Facility Manager)
Darren Lou, an intern from the School of Built Environment, took the lead on this project. He conducted a thorough review of the asset, proposed a solution, and initiated the process to convert the old gas BBQ to a modern, reliable electric version. This wasn’t just about swapping out the BBQ; it involved terminating gas services, ensuring the electrical system could handle the new load, and managing the entire procurement and installation process.
As Darren’s tenure came to an end, the project was handed over to current interns Ben and Liam, who carried it through to completion. Their dedication turned what could have been a simple repair job into a comprehensive learning experience, perfectly embodying the work and smile ethos that drives us at Programmed.
But the story doesn’t end there. We’re planning to further enhance the BBQ area with shade sails and a new bench, creating a space that’s not just functional but inviting, just in time for the summer BBQs. We hope this refurbished area will become a favourite spot for students and staff alike, a place where they can relax, connect, and enjoy the community we’re helping to build.
Our monthly BBQs at Curtin are a testament to our commitment to both our work and the people we work with. They remind us that when we come together, we’re not just getting the job done—we’re building something bigger, one connection, one project, one smile at a time.
