Keeping social with Patrick

May 24, 2019

Growing up, one of Patrick’s best friends suffered from a rare degenerative condition that affected the mind and body. Watching how his friend’s support workers improved and assisted his daily living, and relieved the stress from his parents, Patrick understood first-hand how important support is to those in need.

A self-proclaimed creative type with interests in graphic design, photography and animation, Patrick completed a bachelor’s degree in film and animation, however decided to forgo his degree and concentrate on finding a steadier stream of income. After discovering Enable College was offering a free Certificate II in Disability, Patrick found his calling. Originally working for the Department of Child Protection, Patrick was referred to a position advertised with Programmed Care, and decided it was time to gain experience in disability support.

Looking after a portfolio of up to 15 clients, most days involve a wide range of client services such as social support and social outings, transport to and from appointments, preparing meals, cleaning and making sure all of his clients are up to date with their medication. After working with children for so long and experiencing the associated challenges and rewards, Patrick now enjoys the social aspect of caring for his adult clients. He especially likes hearing their stories, getting to know people he may not have otherwise have had the chance to meet, seeing how different people live and the interesting things they’ve done in their lives.

At the end of the day, Patrick enjoys feeling like he has made a difference in someone’s life, and relishes when clients and their families thank him for his support. After seeing his friend’s family struggle with the challenges of caring for a child with a disability, he understands the importance of providing respite to the families, ensuring they have that extra support to live their lives comfortably at home and enjoy a well-earned break.
