Programmed Joins the 2024 Kimberley 9’s Carnival in Broome

Dec 11, 2024

For the fourth consecutive year, the Purple Hands Foundation, in collaboration with the Fremantle Dockers, hosted the Kimberley 9’s carnival in Broome. This year, approximately 400 primary and secondary school students from across the Kimberley region took part in the two-day event held at Gantheaume Point, Broome.

The Kimberley 9’s AFL football carnival is part of the Kimberley Connected Program. The two-day event is a celebration and reward for students who have attained good school attendance, participated in Program workshops and demonstrated positive behaviors in and out of school in 2024.

The Kimberley Connected carnival event is Program, is supported by Containers for Change and the WA Police, Shire of Broome, Kimberely Regional Service Providers, along with many other local organisations and proudly by Programmed. The carnival brought together students for an interschool round-robin football competition. Fremantle Dockers players Bailey Banfield and Michael Frederick participated in the event assisting with umpiring and shared valuable coaching tips with the young players.

Programmed was pleased to be part of this vibrant community event for the second time, with Roslyn Harley, First Nations Engagement Manager, and Ben Hasler, Justice Integration Team Leader being extra pairs of hands at the event.  Programmed provided catering support for the, and worked closely with Woolworths in getting a huge supply of fresh fruit and much needed bags of ice for the two-day carnival.

The primary and secondary school students who attended the event proudly wore their 2024 Kimberley 9’s shirts, which were designed by 165 students from across the Kimberley. Day one kicked off with a Welcome to Country, followed by a day filled with football and the opportunity for students to build connections and engage with one another.

It was a privilege to be part of this incredible initiative, and we look forward to being involved again next year!
