Programmed is proud to partner with Capital Region Community Services (CRCS) each year for the 10/10 Project which is designed to help people in the local community transform their overgrown gardens into tranquil spaces in time for them to enjoy over summer. Volunteers from Programmed are always happy to get stuck into the collective gardening effort to spruce up people’s backyards.
The gardening initiative brings together individual volunteers, community-minded organisations and green-fingered volunteer gardeners from across Canberra, who work in teams to clear up the backyards of around 10 properties over 10 hours.
Programmed supports the annual 10/10 Project by providing a team of volunteers and donating funds to the project.
Graham McKerchar, Senior Manager – Transport for Capital Region Community Services, is proud of the positive difference the day makes every year;
“The 10/10 Project is a massive team effort and we thank each and every one who took part. Our volunteer teams have achieved fantastic results again this year and have made a real difference in the lives of the people whose homes we had the privilege of visiting for this year’s 10/10.”
“Capital Region Community Services would like to acknowledge the ongoing contribution of Housing ACT and Programmed whose donations each year make the 10/10 Project possible. Thank you for your ongoing support.”
The 10/10 project is designed to help support people in the community who need additional help with tackling their backyard due to health conditions, lack of equipment or financial reasons. Priority is given to tackling those really overgrown gardens and clearing away the green waste, so that people can enjoy their gardens this summer.
This year around 60 volunteers from Programmed, CRCS, Housing ACT, ACT Health Directorate and individual community volunteers, all put on their gardening gloves, pulled up weeds, pushed lawn mowers, snipped branches and cleared up green waste, to help out households in need across Canberra.
‘Blitzing’ these backyards enables tenants to be able to enjoy their outdoor spaces safely this summer, breathing new life into their gardens and bringing them the positive benefits of being able to enjoy their transformed outside space. Clearing up back gardens at this time of year can also help reduce bushfire risks as we head into summer. This year the Programmed volunteers taking part came from a range of jobs including project supervisors, admin and customer call centre staff, and staff from the social inclusion team.
Programmed’s Social Inclusion Manager, Gregory Lackey, joins in the 10/10 project every year;
“It’s incredible to be part of a project that makes such a positive difference in the local community. It’s always a really good day out – everybody gets stuck into the gardening, CRCS always provide amazing support. It’s great for team bonding and community spirit. Seeing the real difference we make on the day and knowing that we can help people enjoy their gardens this summer, that kids will be able to play outside, that’s what makes it so meaningful.”
The 10/10 Project is made possible every year by the CRCS team who lead and co-ordinate the large-scale community event, as well as the volunteers who come from a range of organisations and kind-hearted individuals from the local community, who give up their time and work together to tidy up the backyards on the day.

The 10/10 Project commenced in 2012, and goes from strength to strength every year, as community works together to make difference in the lives of our community members. Your support can be shown in a variety of ways including:
- Financial support via a donation to contribute towards the cost of supplies
