Rockhampton Girls Grammar School in Central Queensland is an all-girls school that believes women can achieve anything. The school seeks to empower young women, helping them to realise their strengths and how they can apply themselves to make an impact on the community.
Project Description
Rockhampton Girls Grammar School values creativity in artistic and intellectual pursuits, innovation and adaptability, and they share these traits with the local Programmed painting team.
The school has been a partner with Programmed for more than 25 years, and in that time, the team has repainted the school three times.
This time, they decided to take the iconic colours of the school’s heritage listed building – classic cream, trimmed with dark heritage green, Indian red, and white – and spread them throughout the rest of the school’s exterior for a unified colour scheme.
Project Solution
Rockhampton sits on the Tropic of Capricorn, meaning lots of sunlight and hot weather that creates significant wear and tear on the paintwork. The regular maintenance that the team carries out ensures that dust and chalking are kept to a minimum.
Much of the buildings lie on a steep site, and accessing the taller sides of the buildings was tricky. To solve this problem, the team used fixed scaffolding of nearly 30 metres in height to reach the higher levels.
For other areas that were more space-restricted, the team brought in special machines which sat on the flat ground and stretched across significant distances to access the exterior walls of the buildings.
Interior work was also carried out on 19th-century heritage listed Patterson Hall, part of which contained a museum exhibit about the school, with many historic items on display. The Programmed team approached their work in the hall very carefully and delicately to prevent any unintentional damage to the display.
As with most schools, the team worked on the project both during holiday periods, as well as during school term. Significant safety signage and heavy barricades were erected to ensure students were kept away from where the team worked during the term.
Rockhampton Girls Grammar School offers boarding for students from year six onwards, as well as boarding plus options for busy parents. This allows people to board at the school even during holidays when the school hosts large sporting events. Knowing this, Programmed scheduled works at specific times for certain areas of the school to ensure that they wouldn’t disturb more people than necessary.
Project Outcome
The work that Programmed carried out has brought the school back up to a high standard of presentation, earning the gratitude and admiration of the parent body, alumni and the Rockhampton community.
