Project Description
The MCG Great Southern Stand steel structures were faded and peeling as a result of exposure to extreme weather conditions. Immediate attention was required to restore the Stand to its former glory. First-hand experience of Programmed’s specialist capabilities as a result of a long term relationship spanning several decades, the Melbourne Cricket Club (MCC) who are responsible for the MCG, were confident that they could engage and trust Programmed to take on the complex and vital restoration task.
Project Solution
Due to the height at which the works would take place, Programmed put in place a strict safety management plan to ensure the risks around the steelworks restoration were well-mitigated. Work was also planned around the busy MCG sporting schedule. The stand consists of 29 steel structures that extend from the roof’s surface to the mid-level concourse area, 37 meters from the ground.
Prior to painting, each steel structure was pressure washed and mechanically abraded due to the poor substrate condition. Programmed used 1,200 litres of Dulux 2 Pac Epoxy Coatings including Durebild STE and Weathermax HBR in the colour Australian Standard Teal, to protect the structures from future deterioration and harsh elements of the erratic Melbourne weather. The benefit of applying 2 Pac Epoxy is the superior corrosion resistance with high surface tolerance that exhibits excellent gloss and colour retention.
To safely access the stand, Programmed utilised a combination of specialised high access equipment and an experienced abseiling team. Only two such machines are available in Australia and Programmed secured exclusive use of the 37 meter spider boom to support the team on ground, while the abseil painters reached the topmost intricate areas.
Project Outcome
Programmed successfully restored all 29 steel structures inside a tight time frame and without any incident, bringing the Southern Stand back to its full glory for an outcome Programmed, the MCC and the MCG can all be proud of.
Project completion presented Programmed with a fantastic opportunity being awarded the winner at the 2017 Master Painters Awards For Excellence in the Commercial Repaint category.
